These series of articles are not going to recommend any “MUST GO” sightseeing points or route you could not missed, but to share some interesting places we have visited in Hamburg.

Keyword: U3 With this Subway you could connect to almost all the tourist points. ^^

„We all live in our yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine...“

You may not be able to find a yellow submarine in Germany, but you could visit a REAL submarine in Hamburg.

Built in 1976 by the Soviet, U-434 is a classic view in the Hamburg harbour. After a 26-years serving it was handed to Hamburg and exhibited as a museum, as an evidence of the cold war and also a memorial to the war.

U-434 is definitely unsuitable for those suffer from claustrophobia. It is only 8.72 meters wide and full of machines. Visitors could barely walk between the machine blocks and the cable runs. If one wants to have a general picture before the visit, Wolfgang Petersen’s war film “Das Boot” (1981) is a perfect choice.

Since U-434 is tied to the bottom of the Elbe river, visitors could still feel the power of the tides during observing the narrow crew’s quarters, the officers’ mess and also the engine and torpedo rooms.

History and military fans would not be disappointed of such amazing museum. It is recommended joining the guided tour to understand the technology and the mechanism behind U-434. Visitors could also take glorious picture in such unique views with a permit (costs € 1.00).
